There have been extensive researches on the benefits of cannabis in the last decades, and each one of them confirmed its therapeutic potential. Not only that it can offer relief of nausea or pain, but as well as it can impede further development of tumor cells and destroy them.
The cancer potency of cannabis was discovered by Cristina Sanchez, a molecular biologist that has been studying the molecular activity of cannabinoids for over 10 years at the Compultense University in Madrid. In this period of researching she found out along with her esteemed colleagues that THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) which is the main psychoactive component of cannabis causes apoptosis “death” of tumor cells. Moreover, while destroying the unhealthy cells, it leaves the healthy ones intact which is not the case with the conventional cancer treatments.
Cannabis Fights Cancer
The goal of Dr. Sanchez and her team was in the beginning to study brain cancer cells so that to find out how they work. They have introduced the use of THC and noticed that when tumor cells were exposed to THC, they stopped to multiply and proliferate, and also destroyed themselves. These tests were successful with cells grown in Petri dishes, and as well as in animal laboratory tests with cancers. These rodents were affected with breast and brain tumors, and the researchers treat them with cannabinoid therapies. According to the obtained results cannabinoids can be helpful and efficient in the case of breast cancer.
These findings Dr. Sanchez for the first time in 1998 released in public, in the article on the anticancer effects of THC in the European biochemistry journal FEBS Letters.
Cannabis compounds can be used by the human body
In the eighties of the previous century there was a conducted research on the effects of THC on the human body, and it was revealed that the human body contains two specific targets for THC: an endogenous structure that treats THC and other cannabinoids named as endocannabinoid system, and many other cannabinoid receptors present in the body. Both natural systems contribute to the benefits of cannabinoids offered to the body, and some of them are not available in nature.
As per the findings of the Dr. Cristina Sanchez, the endocannabinoid system regulates plenty of vital biological functions like reproduction, motor behaviors, appetite, food consumption, and so on. As a result of that cannabis offers many therapeutic properties.
During the process of inhalation or consumption, cannabis cannabinoids are entering into the body’s natural endocannabinoid system, binding to cannabinoid receptors in the same way as endogenous cannabinoids. This ability of cannabis was demonstrated by Cristina Sanchez’s team on animal subjects with breast and brain cancers. Once used the tumor cells were in a state of apoptosis meaning that the cells are self-destructing themselves just like committing a suicide.
In the study of Cristina, the cancer cells were terminated after the treatment with cannabinoids, and the healthy ones remained safe. Cannabinoids only targets tumor cells without harming the normal cells, which is very important for the overall well-being of the body. The conventional cancer therapy – chemo kills the healthy ones as well thus deteriorating the health condition of the body. Therefore, the use of cannabis in these health conditions is very beneficial as it contains high therapeutic potential.
However, this substance is still listed in Schedule I, prohibited substances which amazes Dr. Sanchez as her research and many other researchers have confirmed the therapeutic potential of this plant.
The research of Cristina Sanchez resembles to the findings of the research conducted by Rick Simpson, a Canadian scientist who produced cannabis oil known as Phoenix Tears. This oil was used by many cancer patients that reported positive results without showing any adverse effects.
Cristina Sanchez’s study is the first step of revealing the therapeutic properties of cannabis, many researchers will continue her work, and for sure in time convince official governments to consider the therapeutic virtues of cannabis in the treatment of cancer. This is a huge breakthrough for all cancer patients all around the world.
