For the patents of Alzheimer’s there is a new hope if the theory of Dr. Mary Newport is confirmed to be accurate.
According to her theory the ketone bodies, which are obtained in the body while the digestion of coconut oil, can serve as alternative brain fuel. Coconut oil can offer a wide range of benefits in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease.
She claims all this because she has experienced the symptoms of this terrible diseases by herself, namely her husband Steve struggled with progressive dementia for over 5 years in his midfifties. Afterwards, he did aMRI scan and thus got the diagnoses of Alzheimer’s.
Here it is what Dr. Newport says about her own experience with this disease:
“Many days, often for several days in a row, he was in a fog; couldn’t find a spoon or remember how to get water out of the refrigerator… One day I would ask if a certain call came that I was expecting and he would say ‘No.’ Two days later he would remember the message from so-and-so from a couple of days earlier and what they said.”
This incident showed to her that her husband did not have a short-term memory, but the information was still in his brain. Therefore, she figured it out that in some way these occurrences must be related to the daily diet.
Her husband Steve was on the conventional treatment of this disease, but he rapidly lost weight, forgot how to use a calculator, how to cook, and he had come to a situation of not being able to do the simplest operations during the day.
Dr. Newport suspected again that the diet had something to do with it. However, Steve stayed in a healthy physical condition and spent his days working in his garage or garden.
She started a comprehensive exploration on the potential use of medium chain triglycerides or ketone bodies in the prevention and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease.
The research has revealed the potency of medium-chain triglycerides in the treatment of diabetes, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, and drug-resistant epilepsy.
Dr. Newport states the following:
“Ketone bodies may help the brain recover after a loss of oxygen in newborns through adults, may help the heart recover after an acute attack, and may shrink cancerous tumors. Children with drug-resistant epilepsy sometimes respond to an extremely low carbohydrate ketogenic diet.”
The body will use ketone bodies as an alternative fuel when there is a shortage of glucose that comes as a result of a low-carb diet, or when the body is in fasting period. Ketone bodies do not normally circulate in the body if you are consuming carbs and thus lots of glucose.
Additionally Dr. Newport explains:
“In Alzheimer’s disease, the neurons in certain areas of the brain are unable to take in glucose due to insulin resistance, and slowly die off… if these cells had access to ketone bodies, they could potentially stay alive and continue to function.”
As a result of this she initiated the treatment with coconut oil. She gave Steve a dose of coconut oil every day, and after 60 days, her husband showed positive changes in mood and alert. He lost the tremor that occurred as a result of the disease, plus he became happier, more talkative, and even start to make jokes with other people. He received 2 tablespoons of coconut oil two times a day, and in that way she ensured that there is a constant circulation of ketone bodies.
Steve was and still is on this treatment, but after a year of this treatment, his condition improved substantially. Steve still experiences difficulties in finding some words; however he started to recognize the relatives and friends, and also he is taking a part in conversations. Today he is a more positive person showing more animated facial expressions.
Here it is what Dr. Newport says:
“For now, we are very pleased with where he is at and should coconut oil stop or slow down the progress of his disease, it will be worth every drop that he takes.”
