Fasting is very beneficial for the human body, and most of you are pretty aware of that. There is a belief that this may harm the health, but according to science fasting and even intermitted fasting, limited eating time up to 8 – 10 hours is good for your health.
This was followed by our ancestors as food was not always available on the table so in a way they were forced to fast. Plus, on the table was served only few ingredients which we cannot state the same for our tables nowadays.
Animals in the wilderness are also fasting in some way as they do not have food always available and because of that when they catch a prey they stuff themselves till they find something else and for that they need to wait for a longer period of time.
In this article we recommend a fasting period of 3 days which will boost your overall immunity.
A 3-Day Fasting
If you fast for three days your body will not only gain a better immunity, but as well as it will start to regenerate itself as per a released study in the June 5, 2014 issue in the journal Cell Stem Cell. Fasting can contribute to a long life and a good health. According to researchers of this study starving the body can stimulate the production of new white blood cells in the stem cells and in that way help the body to fight the infection. This can be very helpful in the case of cancer.
Benefits of Fasting for Cancer Patients
The 3-day fasting is beneficial for cancer patients as in that way they are being protected from the toxic effects of chemotherapy. Chemo is an aggressive cancer therapy which is accompanied with side effects and the implementation of the fasting period can relieve some of the adverse effects according to the findings of this study. Namely, the researchers state that the fasting period activates a regeneration switch.
A Comprehensive Study on the Benefits of Fasting
The lead author of the study and professor of gerontology and biological sciences at the University of California, Professor Valter Longo maintains that the fasting can help the body to produce a new immune system.
According to this professor fasting helps “the stem cells to move forward, proliferate, and rebuild the entire system”. The body eliminates the parts of its system that might be damaged or old, and also its other ineffective parts during the process of fasting. Fasting can be very beneficial even to a highly damaged body system as a result of chemo or aging. The implementation of the fasting cycles can literally generate a new immune system.
In this study the involved participants were supposed to fast for periods of 2 to 4 days on regular basis for a 6-month period. The findings of this study were that not only the immune and body system regenerates, but as well as they noticed a decrease in levels of IGF-1, which is a growth factor hormone linked to aging, tumor progression and cancer risk.
The Positive Results of the Study
The researchers of this study along with Professor Longo were amazed by the positive results of the fasting period. They have discovered that the number of white blood cells reduced with prolonged fasting.
The implementation of prolonged fasting forces the body to draw energy from its own reserves of glucose and fat, but most importantly it breaks down much of the white blood cells. In the period of each fasting cycle, the depletion of white blood cells incites stem cell-based regeneration of new cells in the immune system.
Here it is what Professor Longo states regarding this:
“It was unthinkable that prolonged fasting had such a remarkable effect on the regeneration of the hematopoietic system from stem cells.”
In plain words, when we are hungry, the body is aware of the food shortage and thus saves the energy by recycling many unnecessary immune cells, particularly the ones that could be damaged.
