Honey is an amazing natural bee product known for its potent antioxidant, antifungal and antibacterial properties thus making it a great natural remedy against many ailments. This product is known by the human kind for centuries which was commonly used in the treatment of symptoms of colds and coughs.
Honey is really delicious natural ingredient which reveals a wide spectrum of health benefits. It is more effective against coughing then the conventionally used antibiotics.
A Great Treatment of Cough – Honey
According to the findings of various health experts it is better to use honey along with some over-the-counter medication and in that way treat cough than immediately reaching for the use of antibiotics.
The benefits of honey in case of treating coughing were revealed in the new guidelines of the National Institute of Health and Care (NICE) and Public Health England (PHE). These institutions demonstrated that the use of honey is very effective in lowering the symptoms of acute cough as a result of respiratory tract infection. The cough due to this condition can be treated very quickly without using any antibiotics.
According to Dr. Tessa Lewis, MD, Chair of the NICE Antimicrobial Prescribing Guideline Group: “If someone has runny nose, sore throat, and cough, the symptoms may go away in two to three weeks without that antibiotics are needed.”
However, Dr. Lewiss maintains that you should first try to treat the cough with honey, but if the symptoms of the cough worsen and thus making you short of breath or extremely weak, then by all means pay a visit to your doctor. This also applies if the affected person develops a pre-existing condition like a lung disease or cystic fibrosis, which means that an immediate visit to a medical expert is highly recommended.
If you do not experience anything of the above but just struggle with a simple cough, then you should follow the NICE guidelines, which means taking honey along with cough medicines that will help you to successfully soothe the cough.
The Use of Antibiotics
You should not immediately turn to the use of antibiotics as most acute coughs caused by viruses do not respond to antibiotics. These medicines are effective when the infection is caused by bacteria.
If that is not the case then the intake of antibiotics will not be of great use when cough is concerned as it does not affect the severity of the symptoms or their duration. You should be very careful about the use of antibiotics as the body can easily become immune to their use. The bacteria get used to them and they do not pose any threat to them anymore. If you are dealing with a bacterial infection, then your doctor should prescribe you antibiotics. Otherwise, their intake can just trigger certain side effects and the bacteria will become resistant to them.
Here it is what Dr. Susan Hopkins, Assistant Director of the PHE Program for Healthcare-Associated Infections and Antimicrobial Resistance, says regarding the use of antibiotics, quoting: “Taking antibiotics when you do not need them puts you and your family at risk of contracting an infection difficult to treat. It also urges doctors to refrain from prescribing antibiotics when they may not be needed.”
Honey – The Natural Cough Treatment
Aside the fact that it reveals powerful antibacterial and antioxidant properties what makes it so effective against cough is the sticky texture of honey. This property of honey makes it an amazing cough remedy. Honey is a natural softener and an antimicrobial that can soothe irritated mucous membranes and remove the reflex of coughing.
As per a conducted study by the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania, honey is very beneficial natural product in the case of children. Its use effectively relieves the symptoms of coughing in this young population especially when occurring at night and at the same time treat sleep disorders related to an infection of the respiratory tract.
