Depression has become a common disease by which many people are being affected. Although it is still a taboo it is very present in the modern society and among many reasons for its occurrence according to scientists there is the physical one, inflammation.
This mental condition appears in seizures and depressive periods manifested by profound sadness, sleep disturbances, low self-esteem, guilt, loss of appetite, suicidal thoughts and tendencies, loss of motivation, and feeling little or no pleasure. Aside these depressive episodes it can turn into a more serious form like chronic depression.
Once determined, an appropriate treatment is prescribed to the patients, which is based on psychotherapy and also involves taking antidepressants. But, in order for the treatment to be effective the real root of the issue needs to be determined. Depression can be a result of genetics, traumatic experiences, social environment, or psychological disorders. In addition to these factors is also a physical disorder as per latest researches.
Inflammation – A Cause of Depression
Inflammation takes a great part in the appearance of depression as per a scientific study performed by Nils Kappelmann and Glyn Lewis, Departments of Psychiatry at the University of Cambridge and University of London (England). Therefore depression could be treated with anti-inflammatory drugs and anti-cytokines.
Previous research showed that people with depression were more susceptible to inflammation and had a higher rate of cytokines which are pro-inflammatory hormones produced by the immune system. Scientists have analyzed the effect of autoimmune disease treatments on the symptoms of depression, and discovered that anti-inflammatory and anti-cytokine drugs showed positive outcome in the treatment of depression. For that reason, the use of anti-inflammatory and anti-cytokine drugs could be a possible alternative to antidepressants.
The Use of Antidepressants
As we mentioned before the common treatment of depression is the use of antidepressants. But, they can lead to many side effects, and their overuse can have a negative impact on the overall body.
The use of antidepressants is beneficial for certain type of peoplewhose depression is a resultof the serotonin imbalance, a hormone in the brainthat is recognized as the hormone of happiness. The antidepressant tolerance varies as it depends on the person, adverse effects like nausea, headache, diarrhea, behavioral disturbances, libido disturbances, tremors, acting out, and dependence which have been noted in certainpatients like children and adults. These findings were revealed by several experts such as Christophe André, a psychiatrist and author of books on the subject of depression like “My Anti-depression Program”.
Antidepressants should be prescribed only on the patients that reveal positive effects of their use. According to many studies there are effective natural alternatives in the treatment of depression. One of those natural alternatives is the use of saffron as per a performed study by ShahinAkhondazeh of the Psychiatric Research Institute of Tehran (Iran). Researchers have compared the efficacy of imipramine which is present in antidepressants with saffronin about 30 people with mild to moderate depression, and it was revealed that the saffron also effectively increases the release of serotonin and norepinephrine.
