Lyme disease, or otherwise recognized as Lyme borreliosis, is caused by a bacterium Borreliaburgdorferi which in most cases is transmitted by ticks. Although it is an infectious disease, it is not contagious, and can affect anyone no matter of the age or gender.
A common infection, but rather discreet one
This infection is really difficult to detect as the tick bites are quite tiny even unnoticeable. Plus, it is not easy for determination as the symptoms are easily confused with those of another illness, like for instance the flu. The common symptoms are nausea, chills, fever, fatigue, headaches and muscle aches in different parts of the body.
This disease needs to be treated as soon as possible because it can spread to the joints and the nervous system. It can trigger great pain in the joints or cause inflammation, especially in the knees. This condition can become very quickly a chronic one if not treated on time.
There are also other risks if left as it is like the occurrence of neurological issues. There is also the risk of meningitis, paralysis of one half of the face, or numbness of certain limbs or muscles.
From Lyme diseases more than 27,000 people suffer every year in France and the conventional treatment is the use of antibiotics. This treatment treats only the symptoms of the disease, but not the root of the issue and because of that the infection is still in body which can cause a great damage without the affected person being aware of it.
The Right Treatment of Lyme Disease
Therefore, scientists are on the lookout for the right treatment as a result of which many studies were conducted. One of those studies was the study conducted by scientists from the Department of Biology and Environmental Sciences at the University of New Haven in West Haven, Canada. The researchers released their report in the European Journal of Microbiology and Immunology, where they revealed their analyses on the potency of extracts of stevia leaves in the treatment of this disease. The scientists have compared the results of the stevia with the one of the conventional antibiotics commonly used against the bacterium Borreliaburgdorferi. This bacterium can manifest itself in various forms and because of that it is very difficult to treat which makes it resistant to the use of antibiotics. The scientists have come to the conclusion that this pathogenic bacterium can be eliminated from the body by the use of whole leaf extract of stevia which can fight off any forms of the Borreliaburgdorferi.
Effective treatment without adverse effects
Other researchers who have also carried out study on the treatments with antibiotic and stevia revealed that approximately 10 to 20% of people who took antibiotics in the period of 2 to 4 weeks reported side effects of its use. These side effects were related to experiencing fatigue, muscular and joint pain. Some patients reported that these side effects lasted up to 6 months after they have finished the antibiotic treatment.
On the other hand, stevia leaves have in their content several kinds of phytochemicals high in antimicrobial properties thanks to which they are effective against many types of pathogens. Therefore, it was concluded that the extract of stevia leaves is in fact an effective agent against the bacteria Borreliaburgdorferi and thus effectively treating Lyme disease. But, in the case of stevia leaves there have not been found any adverse effects.
These are only preliminary studies which reveal only positive effects of their use. This plant may surprise us even more in future.
