The Proper Way of Using Baking Soda to Wash Off the Toxic Pesticides from Your Fruits & Vegetables

Pesticides are very common in the food today as they are frequently used in the agriculture so that the crops are with high production. However, the use of pesticides is very harmful for the health of the people.

As per the findings of WHO – World Health Organization:

“Pesticides are chemicals used in agriculture to protect crops against insects, fungi, weeds and other pests. In addition to their use in agriculture, pesticides are also used to protect public health in controlling the vectors of tropical diseases, such as mosquitoes.

But pesticides are also potentially toxic to humans. They may induce adverse health effects including cancer, effects on reproduction, immune or nervous systems. Before they can be authorized for use, pesticides should be tested for all possible health effects and the results should be analyzed by experts to assess any risks to humans.”

The harmful effects of the pesticides can be reduced with the use of the baking soda. What you need to do is to nicely wash your fruits and vegetables with the baking soda so that the pesticides are efficiently removed, even up to 96%.

Baking soda is a natural product with versatile uses offering so many benefits for the body and as well as for the household. Moreover, numerous studies reveal that it is even more effective than the standard bleaching procedures. The use of baking soda will successfully neutralize chemicals and pesticides by breaking them down into molecules due to its alkaline nature.

The positive effects of baking soda were proven by the researchers at the University of Massachusetts. They have used baking soda on gala apples which were treated with two of the most common pesticides like phosmet, an insecticide, and thiabendazole, a fungicide that penetrates the apple peels.

The apples were rinsed with three liquids: the first one was tap water, the second a 1% of baking soda/water solution, and the third liquid was the most popular bleaching solution, approved by the United States Environmental Protection Agency.

The best rinse was the second solution based on baking soda which removed the most pesticide residue from apples, but it needed 12 – 15 minutes to fully eliminate all of them.

The lead author of this study, Dr. Lili, stated the following:

“Pesticide residues may remain on agricultural produce, where they contribute to the total dietary intake of pesticides. Concerns about potential hazards of pesticides to food safety and human health have increased, and therefore, it is desirable to reduce these residues.”

The use of baking soda will nicely clean the fruits and vegetables and thus reduce the risk of health issues.

Prepare the following solution and remove the residues of pesticides on your fruits and vegetables. In a bowl of water add a few tablespoons of baking soda and then put the produce in the resulting solution to soak for a few minutes. In the end, wash it off with cold water.  You can also scrub them with a little bit of baking soda.

This is a simple method, but very beneficial and efficient.

You can protect your body and health from the overuse of pesticides by following these tips:

  • Find out which foods are with higher pesticide residue levels and try to avoid their consumption.
  • Keep your garden insects at bay by applying non-toxic strategies.
  • Try to buy organic and locally grown fruit and vegetables or if possible grow your own produce.
